In that terrible moment I saw what few men had seen, even those accustomed to camp upon and inhabit living islands, the monster beneath the placid surface, hundreds of tentacle-like filaments, tiny eyes, and a sharp, hooklike beak. It could well be that, in that brief moment, it was the first time the eyes of the Brigand Island had risen above the surface.
