It has two narrow windows placed some eight feet above the floor level, and has a single, heavy, timber door. At night, the slaves are chained to the wall, by the neck, an ankle, or, in some cases, by a wrist. Each is given a blanket. I supposed that one or more of the slaves might have been less than pleasing and, as a consequence, as a discipline, all might have been moved to the other common holding area, favored in better weather, the kennels under the long shed lining the inner wall of the holding.
